First off, I hope everyone did a better job of following my Derby picks than I did! Had I just stuck to my recommended betting advice, I would have cashed out huge! But instead I listened to my longtime betting partner and we tinkered with the trifecta just enough that I lost those bets. Fortunately, my across the board bets on Mandaloun and the exacta came through, so a successful day. And I was hot on the undercard! As my good buddy reminded me, a broken clock is right twice a day!
Tiz Life - Finishes 8th in First Start
Tiz Life made his debut in the last race on Friday April 30th at Oaklawn in a MSW Sprint. As stated in previous blogs, this monster of a horse is built to go long, with the pedigree saying the same thing. So what we wanted to see in this start is how he would handle all of the things leading up to the race, and then how he would take dirt in his face, fight, etc. Tiz passed all those tests as we desired. Breaking correctly, he then was outrun in the early going, ate dirt just fine, moved inside then between horses, made up ground in the turn then tired in the sprint style race. We are pleased and can now take the next step with him. Results et al HERE
Newscaster - Finishes 5th in Allowance Race at Lone Star
Newscaster made his first start against winners, and his first start in full mud on Friday at Lone Star. Drawing the rail, Newscaster was sent to the lead early, went very quick, was approached turning from home both inside and out, and fought gamely before getting passed by two more horses in the dying yards to finish 5th. He was only beaten by 2.5 lengths for the win. We were encouraged on several fronts - first the post position was bad and he was made to go to the lead and be in an uncomfortable position; secondly - Newscaster had a history of wilting under pressure and avoiding other horses when they came to him - This time he fought and tried to win before tiring in the final stages. We will get him in the right places and have some fun with him. He isn't quite the horse we thought he could be, but he has a place. Results and the rest HERE
