Ran M Leonard
President and Managing Partner, Crescent Capital LLC
Ran M Leonard has been in thoroughbred racing and around horses the majority of his life. As a child, he spent weekends and as much time as he could at his grandparents Ran and Carol Ricks’ Cres Ran Farm in Crescent, Oklahoma. While his mother didn’t love her baby boy being around the horses, Grandpa would take him up to the farm and the lifelong attachment to horses was born.
Ran and Carol Ricks were perennial leading owners at Remington Park and elsewhere around the Southwest, racing primarily at Oaklawn Park, Arlington Park and Churchill Downs in addition to their “home” track of Remington Park. Keeping a steady band of 15-20 mares and foaling the majority out at Cres Ran Farms, there were plenty of horses of all ages for the grandson Ran to learn from.
When Ran Ricks passed away suddenly in December of 1996, “Little Ran” was put in charge of dispersing the horses. With “Grandma” Mrs. Ricks still alive and wanting to keep some of the horses, “Little Ran” dove head first into finding away to keep the horse business going for his grandmother. With great teachers in Oklahoma Car Dealer and Breeder John Smicklas, Leading Trainer Steve Hobby and Bloodstock Agent Mike Shannon in Kentucky, Leonard shifted from a large breeding and racing operation based in Oklahoma to a smaller commercial breeding and racing operation based between Kentucky and Oklahoma.
Since taking over as Manager of the re-branded Cres Ran LLC, Leonard has been fortunate enough to be a part of many successful horses and ventures. Notables include Tiz Miz Sue, winner of the Grade 1 Ogden Phipps at Belmont for Cres Ran LLC and the dam of a $2.5 million dollar Tapit colt bred and sold by Cres Ran LLC now named Tatweej who is in training with Todd Pletcher; the legend Chindi, winner of multiple Grade 3 races including the Count Fleet at Oaklawn for Cres Ran LLC; Sue’s Good News, the Grade 3 winner of the Singapore Plate at Arlington Park after being purchased by Cres Ran LLC as a yearling at the Keeneland September Sale, and has since gone on to becoming a foundation mare all over the country; and Bulletin, winner of the 2018 Breeders Cup Juvenile Turf and bred by Cres Ran LLC out of the mare Sue’s Good News.
Representing many clients as an agent at the sale, and participating in all aspects of the industry, Leonard believes now is the time to dive into the syndicate market with a fair, shareholder friendly opportunity based in the Southwest.
The time is now to expand and bring this wonderful game everyone!
